- IN1 - INSTALLATION
-
- Please uninstall older versions of McAfee
- VirusScan and its features before you install
- this product. If the Setup program detects an
- older version of McAfee VirusScan or McAfee
- Firewall, you will be prompted to exit Setup
- and uninstall the older programs. After
- uninstalling the older programs, you can
- restart Setup.
-
- To install McAfee VirusScan:
-
- - (1) If your computer runs Windows 2000
- Professional or Windows XP (Home or
- Professional), log on to your system as a
- user with administrative rights. You must
- have administrative rights to install this
- software on your system.
-
- - (2) Insert the McAfee VirusScan CD into your
- computerÆs CD-ROM drive. If an the Autorun
- Installation menu does not automatically
- display, go to Step 3. Otherwise, skip to
- Step 4.
-

- Autorun installation menu does not display,
- or, if you obtained your software via
- download at a McAfee web site.
-
- - From the Windows Start menu, select
- Run.
- The Run dialog box displays.
- - Type <X>:\SETUP.EXE in the Run dialog
- text box, and click OK.
- Here, <X> represents the drive letter
- for your CD-ROM drive or the path to
- the folder that contains your
- extracted VirusScan files. To search
- for the correct files on your hard
- disk or CD-ROM, click Browse.
-
- - (4) Before proceeding with the installation,
- Setup first checks to see whether your
- computer is already running the Microsoft
- Windows Installer (MSI) utility running as
- part of your system software.
-
- - If your computer runs Windows XP,
- Windows Me, or Windows 2000, MSI
- already exists on your system. If your
- computer runs an earlier Windows
- release, you may still have MSI in
- your computer if you previously
- installed other software that uses
- MSI. In either of these cases, Setup
- will display its first wizard panel
- immediately. Skip to Step 5 to
- continue.
- - If Setup does not find MSI or an
- earlier version of MSI is installed in
- your computer, it installs files
- necessary to continue the
- installation, then prompts you to
- restart your computer. Click Restart
- System. When your computer restarts,
- Setup will continue from where it left
- off.
-
- - (5) Refer to steps displayed on the

- IN2 - TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION
-
- The EICAR Standard AntiVirus Test File is a
- combined effort by anti-virus vendors
- throughout the world to implement one standard
- by which customers can verify their anti-virus
- installations.
-
- 1. To test your installation, copy the
- following line into its own file, then
- save the file with the name EICAR.COM.
-
- X5O!P%@AP[4\PZX54(P^)7CC)7}$EICAR-STANDARD-ANTIVIRUS-TEST-FILE!$H+H*
-
- 2. The file size will be 68 or 70 bytes.
- 3. Next, start your anti-virus software and

- KN1 - KNOWN ISSUES
-
- - Using VirusScan with Eudora
-
- If HAWKÆs pattern matching capability
- detects mass outgoing e-mail traffic, you
- will be presented with multiple and
- concurrent alert messages.
-
- This behavior is normal due to the manner in
- which Eudora transmits outgoing e-mail
- messages.
-
- - Previous version settings not retained.
-
- If you are upgrading to McAfee VirusScan 7.0
- from an older version of this product (6.0
- or older), the Setup program does not retain
- the settings from your previous versionÆs
- installation (e.g., scan settings).
-
- We therefore recommend that if you want to
- customize your VirusScan settings to suit
- your needs that you do so at your earliest
- convenience.
-
- - The Firewall Network Traffic monitor
- displayed on the VirusScan Home page does
- not function as an integrated component if
- you install McAfee VirusScan with an older
- version of McAfee Firewall (3.0 or older).
- All other features related to the individual
- programs will continue to function
- properly.
-
- - McAfee VirusScan is not currently compatible
- with Autodesk software. For additional
- information, please visit us at
- www.mcafeehelp.com.
-
- - Microsoft ActiveSync will generate the
- following VirusScan HAWK Alert window popup:
- "HAWK has detected a script attempting to
- perform actions that are potentially hostile
- and could harm you computer. A script
- executes a group of commands without user
- intervention.
- Script File: C:\Program Files\Microsoft
- ActiveSync\WCESMgr.exe
- This script is attempting to call the
- GetDefaultFolder method which
- GetDefaultFolder Method.
- Do you want to allow this script to run?"
- Workaround:
- *** This is not a harmful script and you can
- allow this script to run. ***
-
- - If you install McAfee VirusScan 7.0 and then
- install an older version of any McAfee
- product, uninstalling McAfee VirusScan 7.0
- may corrupt and render the older McAfee
- product ineffective. The older McAfee
- products affected are as follows:
- - McAfee Firewall 3.x and older
- - McAfee Internet Security 4.x and
- older
- - Internet Guard Dog 3.0 and older
- - McAfee QuickClean 2.x and older
- - McAfee Uninstaller 6.5 and older
-
- To remedy this problem:
- 1. Uninstall the older McAfee product.
- 2. Restart your computer.
- 3. Reinstall the older McAfee product.
-
- - Installation / uninstallation issues:
- - Uninstallation does not remove all
- Registry entries
- - VirusScan 3.X must be manually
- uninstalled before installing this
- VirusScan 7.0
-
- - Important Information Regarding Windows XP
- Migration:
- Upgrading your computer's operating system
- from any version of Windows to Windows XP
- causes all McAfee products installed before
- migration to become disabled after migration
- to Windows XP. You will be made aware of
- this issue as you make your first attempt to
- start a McAfee product (after migration) -
- you will be instructed to reinstall the
- product. Therefore, you will need to
- uninstall all McAfee products and reinstall
- using your installation CD or the software
- obtained from McAfee via download. Please
- note, you can uninstall this product before
- or after upgrading to Windows XP.
-
- - To remove this program from your computer;
- to repair your installation; or to change
- its installation configuration, you must log
- in to your computer with a user-id that has
- administrative rights if your computerÆs
- operating system is Windows 2000
- Professional or Windows XP [Home or
- Professional].
-
- - Windows XP installation issues:
- When you install a program on your Microsoft
- Windows XP-based computer, you may receive
- an error message similar to the following:
- Error 1606. Could not access network
- location <Common Administrative Tools>.All
- users\.
- This behavior can occur if there is an
- incorrect setting in the following registry
- entry:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
- Shell Folders\Common Administrative Tools
- Use these steps to resolve this behavior:
- Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry
- may severely damage your system. Before
- making changes to the registry, you should
- back up any valued data on your computer.
- Before you edit the registry, make sure you
- understand how to restore it if a problem
- occurs. For information about how to do
- this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help
- topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a
- Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
- (1) Click Start, and click Run.
- (2) In the Open box, type regedit, and click
- OK.
- (3) Locate and click (highlight) the
- following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
- Shell Folders
- (4) In the right pane of the Registry Editor
- window, double-click Common Administrative
- Tools.
- (5) In the Value data box of the Edit String
- dialog box that displays, type the following
- line, and then click OK:
- %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start
- Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
- (6) On the File menu, click Exit to quit
- Registry Editor.
- (7) Restart the computer.
-
- - As VirusScan performs an on-demand scan of
- compressed archive (e.g., .zip file) the
- VirusScan scan engine traverses and scans
- all files included in the compressed
- archive. However, the VirusScan Summary
- detail reports each compressed archive
- scanned as one file scanned.
-
- - If the text displayed on the Autorun image
- is illegible; or appears in an
- unrecognizable font, then there may be too
- many fonts installed in your computer.
-
- NOTE: The Autorun image presents you with an
- on-screen installation menu after you insert
- the McAfee installation CD into your
- computerÆs CD-ROM drive.
-
- To install this product, from your Windows
- Desk top, right-click My Computer and select
- Browse. Locate the following program file:
- <x>:\vsp\setup.exe. Here X represents the
- drive letter of your computerÆs CD-ROM
- drive.
- Double-click setup.exe to install McAfee
- VirusScan. Refer to the steps displayed on
- the Installation Wizard to complete your
- installation.
-
- - Installation of VirusScan on a computer with
- a Windows 2000 o/s and Adaptec DirectCD 4.0
- or earlier will cause your computer to enter
- an endless shut-down and re-start loop -
- immediately upon your first attempt to
- restart your computer. To prevent this
- incident from occurring, do one of the
- following:
-
- A. Install Adaptec DirectCD 5.01 or later
- before installing McAfee VirusScan.
-
- B. Refer to the steps below to correct the
- problem.
- - As your computer attempts to restart,
- switch to SAFE MODE of start-up.
- - Access the Windows control panel and
- double-click the VirusScan icon.
- - Select the Services tab and clear the
- "Load on startup" check box. Click
- OK.
- - Restart your computer normally.
- - Install Adaptec DirectCD 5.01 or
- later.
- - After you have installed DirectCD
- 5.01, access the Windows control panel
- and double-click the VirusScan icon.
- Select the Services tab and check the
- "Load on startup" check box. Click OK
- and restart your computer.
-
- - VirusScan's VShield on-access scanner (OAS)
- by design - does not identify infected files
- compressed into zip archives until the user
- extracts the files from the archive.
-
- - Users of PSION devices upgrading their
- computer's operating system to Windows 2000
- or Windows XP require PsiWin v2.3.3 (or
- higher) to connect with their wireless
- device. The latest version of this software
- is available at: http://www.psion.com"
-
- - Insufficient Drive Space messages: Free
- drive space, in addition to the amount
- described under "System Requirements - MB of
- hard disk space", must be available to run
- Setup and install your McAfee product. The
- amount of additional space depends upon your
- computer's Operating System and its
- configuration. If, during setup, you receive
- an "insufficient drive space" message, exit
- setup and remove unnecessary files from your
- computer. Re-start Setup. Perform these
- steps as necessary until you do not receive
- an insufficient drive space message."
-
- - Safe & Sound is only available for Windows
- 98, and Windows Me. For more information
- about Safe & Sound please refer to on-line
- help or your Product Guide.
-
- - Disk defragmentation programs move files to
- maximize hard disk efficiency. If you have
- the VShield scanner, the VirusScan
- application, or another application active
- during a disk defragmentation operation,
- your defragmentation program might tell you
- that it cannot find the active application
- files.
-
- This is normal and does not mean that the
- files do not exist. To avoid error messages
- like this, close all open applications and
- disable the VShield scanner, then run your
- disk defragmentation operation again.
-
- NOTE: Please be sure to disconnect from the
- Internet before you disable VirusScan.
-
- - VirusScan 7.0 will not correctly interpret
- the settings saved in older .VSC files.
- VirusScan 4.0.3 or older .VSC files are not
- recognized by version 7.0.
-
- - The System Restore functionality in Windows
- Millennium Edition preserves all deleted
- files. As a result, if you select "Delete"
- as the scannerÆs response to detecting an
- infection, the file is not actually deleted,
- but moved to the _Restore folder, from which
- the VirusScan software cannot delete it.
- Microsoft refers to this condition in an
- article located at the following URL:
-
- - When multiple users are used in a Windows
- 2000 or Windows XP [Home or Professional]
- system, the user has the ability to secure
- folders located on an NTFS-formatted drive.
- These secured folders cannot be scanned by
- any user other than its owner, or those
- authorized by the owner, with VSC. To scan
- these folders, the owner or authorized user
- of the folder, must log on and execute the
- scan.
-
- - Instant Updater is unable to determine the
- actions performed by the user after
- downloading a product upgrade. Product
- upgrades consist of patches and bug fixes,
- etc; and do not include incremental DAT's
- (virus definition files). The upgrade
- process runs using a program that applies an
- upgrade independently of McAfee's Instant
- Updater tool. As such, Instant Updater's
- summary screen displays the same result:
- "successful" message, regardless of whether
- the user completes the upgrade process or
- not.
-
- - Scenario: An attempt to update a McAfee
- product using Instant Updater returns the
- following error message:
-
- "Instant Updater was unable to communicate
- with the server. Please try again later.
- (-202)." This message displays in response
- to one of the following events:
-
- - The McAfee server is busy or not
- available.
- Solution: Try again later.
- - Instant Updater was unable to
- communicate with the server due to no
- Internet connection.
- Solution: Verify your computer
- maintains an Internet connection. If
- you are not connected, reconnect and
- try again.
-
- - Instant Updater not properly installed.
-
- If the following error message displays:
- Error -103 (Instant Updater is not properly
- installed), please download and install
- Microsoft's updated XML parser.
- You can find the MSXML Parser 3.0 Service
- Pack 2 Release update at the following
- location (you can copy and paste this URL
- into the address bar of your Internet
- browser):
- If you continue to receive -103 errors after
- applying this Microsoft patch, the update
- may not have registered a file correctly.
- Therefore, please try the following:
- (1) From the Windows task bar, select Start
- > Run (The Run dialog displays).
-
- (2) In the Run dialog type the following:
- regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\msxml3.dll"
-
- NOTE: %SystemRoot% is a variable that refers
- to the default Windows\system directory.
- Windows 98/ME - Substitute c:\windows\system
- for '%SystemRoot%/System32'
-
- (3) Click OK.
- You should receive a message that the
- DllRegisterServer succeeded. If you continue
- to receive -103 errors, please contact
- technical support.
-
- - AOL stops responding after updating.
-
- After you update this product, Instant
- Updater may prompt you to restart your
- computer. If you click "Yes" to restart your
- computer now and your computerÆs default
- browser is AOL, you may experience
- situations where your computer does not shut
- down. If you experience this situation,
- simply restart your computer to apply the
- updates.

- FQ1 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
- Regularly updated lists of frequently asked
- questions about McAfee products are also
- available on the Networks Associates web site,
- on CompuServe, and on America Online.
-
- Q: I am installing new software on my computer,
- and the manual recommends disabling any
- anti-virus software. How do I disable the
- VShield scanner without uninstalling it?
-
- A: If you are running the VirusScan software on
- a Windows 2000 or Windows XP system, you must
- first log into your system with administrative
- rights, then follow the steps outlined below in
- order to disable the VShield scanner. If you
- are running the software on a Windows 98 or
- Windows Me system, you can follow these steps
- immediately:
-
- - Right-click the VShield icon located
- in your system tray next to the system
- clock, then choose "disable VirusScan"
- from the shortcut menu. VShield asks
- you if you are sure you want to
- disable background scanning. Click
- Yes.
-
- - After you install your new software,
- you can reactivate the VShield scanner
- by double-clicking the VirusScan
- Central shortcut on your desktop, or
- from the Windows Start menu select
- Start > Programs > McAfee > McAfee
- VirusScan. When you are prompted to
- load VShield, click Yes. Lastly, you
- can right-click the VShield icon
- located in the system tray and select
- "Launch McAfee VirusScan."
-
-
- Q: I've activated the VirusScan software's
- heuristic scanning option, and now it
- identifies some viruses as "unknown." Why?
-
- A: The heuristic scanning feature looks for
- "virus-like" characteristics in the files it
- scans. When it finds a sufficient number of
- these characteristics, the program concludes
- that the file is infected. This powerful
- technique allows the program to discover
- viruses that are so new that they do not yet
- have names or identities. The program will,
- however, identify viruses by name when they
- match its list of known viruses.
-
- Q: When it detects an infection in files
- compressed in .CAB or ZIP-SFX format, why
- doesn't the VirusScan program clean, delete, or
- move the files?
-
- A: Because files compressed in .CAB and ZIP-SFX
- formats can include a Microsoft Authenticode
- certificate, altering the files can render them
- unusable. To avoid this possibility, the
- program does not clean, delete, or move
- infected files compressed in .CAB or ZIP-SFX
- format. McAfee recommends that you decompress
- any infected files compressed in these formats,
- then run your scan operation again to clean the
- uncompressed files.
-
- Q: The VirusScan software detected a virus on
- my system, but it is not one of the default
- files listed in its Program Extensions dialog
- box. Therefore, I suspect it might be a false
- detection. What can I do to verify a detected
- virus?
-
- A: If you suspect a false detection on a
- non-executable file, run SCAN.EXE, the
- VirusScan command line scanner, to verify the
- infection. If the VirusScan application detects
- a virus and SCAN.EXE does not, download the
- latest .DAT file update, then scan your system
- again. If the VirusScan application still
- detects a virus that you suspect is a false
- detection, please report the issue to Networks
- Associates technical support.
-
- Q: Can I update McAfee data (.DAT) files to
- detect new viruses?
-
- A: Yes. To perform this task, select "Check
- for a VirusScan update" from the Task list
- located on the VirusScan Home page. Or, select
- "Other tasks" and click McAfee Instant Updater.
-
- RESULT: Instant Updater starts and queries our
- updating servers. If the results of the query
- reveal that there is an update to your DAT
- files available, you can direct Instant Updater
- to download and apply the updates to your DATs.
- You can also go to www.mcafee-at-home.com and
- download the latest superDAT update utility.
-
- Q: Why are additional extensions added to the
- User Specified Files list?
-
- A: As the McAfee Anti-Virus Emergency Response
- Team (AVERT) finds viruses that can infect new
- file types, it adds new extensions to the
- default extensions list to enhance security.
- For instance, new viruses can infect Microsoft
- Office binder files, so the default extensions
- list now includes the file extension for these
- binder files so that VirusScan will examine
- them for viruses.
-
- Q: I'm running Microsoft Exchange Client 5.0,
- and the icons that tell me that the VirusScan
- application can run a scan operation from thin
- Exchange aren't showing on my toolbar. Why?
-
- A: Because of a limitation in Microsoft
- Exchange Client v5.0, the two Exchange
- On-Demand scan icons will not appear in the
- Exchange toolbar. Consult your Exchange
- documentation to learn how to place these icons
- onto the toolbar.
-
- Q: I'm running Microsoft Office 2000, and the
- VirusScan icons that let me configure and run
- scan operations aren't showing anywhere in my
- Outlook 2000 toolbar. Are they hidden?
-
- A: By default, Microsoft Office hides icons
- that you have not used in a long time. To see
- the icons, click the arrows at the far right of
- the Outlook toolbar.
-
- Q: I have a .VSC settings file I used with the
- last VirusScan version I had on my system. Can
- I still use this file with this VirusScan
- release?
-
- A: No, this VirusScan version does not
- interpret some of the settings in earlier .VSC
- file versions in the same way, so earlier files
- will not work correctly. McAfee recommends that
- you create and save your settings in a new .VSC
- file for use with this version.
